Expanded Course Description
This course explores the experiential or 'mystical' dimensions of the three major 'Abrahamic' faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). While a ten-week term makes it impossible to undertake a thorough, systematic and historical introduction to each mystical tradition, this course promises a first-hand experience in reading the original spiritual writings (in translation) of women and men from each tradition. The format of the course is a carefully facilitated group discussion, although the professor does, from time to time, lecture on relevant background and contextual matters in order to facilitate the students' reading of the spiritual texts in question. The classroom experience will thus integrate formal lectures with more informal group discussions rooted in the text-at-hand. Students will have many opportunities to explore areas of interest as we journey through the material.
